Career Planning

The State sector provides its people with a working environment where excellence is recognised and rewarded, and where you will be encouraged to develop your talents and career aspirations. Promotion is on merit, not on length of service.

And because the State sector is a diverse set of workplaces comprising a diverse workforce, skills learned in one organisation are most often not unique to that workplace. One of the real benefits of working in a system as diverse as the State sector is that skills are often transferable across the sector – what you do in one job may well be very useful in many other contexts and situations.

The idea of making several moves within your career is encouraged, as it is this breadth of skills, behaviours and experiences that lead to career development.

Every State sector employee will be able to identify a preferred career path and access training that allows them to explore opportunities for progressing. Internal and external training programmes are available, and each organisation has policies setting out what types of courses are funded.

With the idea of transferable skills in mind, the State Services Commission is developing a Career Development Framework to provide guidance about the many and varied career pathways available to staff in the State sector. As well as showing you what options are available, the Career Development Framework will also provide a set of online tools to help you assess your skill level in the core competencies needed in some of the roles you may aspire to work in one day.
